I try to give students several performance opportunities throughout the year, including recitals in December and in June.  There is a yearly fee of $50 ($75 per family)  to cover the costs associated with these performances (venue and pianist).

I like to begin students with the Suzuki Method of violin playing, which treats music like a language – the sound needs to be internalized before it is produced.  This involves listening to music on a regular basis and delaying note reading.  As good habits become established, I am open to different sources and types of music being incorporated, including fiddle tunes.

Shinichi Suzuki (1898-1998) was the founder of the Suzuki Method of Violin Teaching.  There are many facets to this method, but essentially it is based on two concepts: music is a language and like other languages, every child can learn. A cornerstone of this method is daily listening to music.  One important job for the teacher is to break things down into very small steps as needed, so that violin playing isn’t daunting or overwhelming.  Another is to care about the whole child – not just the violin playing.
